Landsite, in collaboration with Creative Road Art Projects, transformed two urban laneways as part of the Monaro Lanes project in Queanbeyan NSW. The two pedestrian laneways, No Name Lane and Blacksmith Lane, intersect with Monaro Street and act as a key link between public car parks, businesses, and venues within the city.
As the landscape architects for this project, Landsite created the concept landscape plan for both laneways, dealt with council approvals, and oversaw the landscape implementation. The project has involved upgrades to the paving, some of the underground infrastructure, existing catenary lighting, new furniture, trees, and garden beds to provide greenery.
Together with Creative Road, Landsite curated and oversaw the implementation, construction, and installation of the light art walls in Blacksmiths Lane and hand–forged signs that were installed at each end of the laneways’ entries. The art wall incorporated lighting as a key element to improve laneway safety and night activation for future pop-up events.
This project is an excellent example of how landscape elements can support public art installations, as we suggested incorporating and extending artworks onto the adjacent buildings. The results successfully integrated the artwork beyond the original scope further embedding the project within the community and surrounding businesses.
The Monaro Lanes project for Queenbeyan NSW transformed two under-ulitised and unattractive spaces into vibrant community places.
